Winona, Minn., July 17, 2007--Kyle Paulson, a recent graduate from Vincennes University in Vincennes, IN and Jaysen Delpierre, a recent graduate from Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny, IA, had a successful racing internship with Bobby Hamilton Racing this past week.
While preparing for the July 14th race both recent graduates worked closely with the BHR crew to prepare the Fastenal #18 Dodge truck for the official NASCAR Championship Truck Series race. The race took place in Sparta, KY where Jaysen and Kyle assisted with the final adjustments on the truck for qualifications as well as assisted the pit crew during the race. #18 driver, Kenny Schrader, took 17th place in his first race at the Kentucky Speedway.
Fastenal selected the two students based on their academic records and personal essays following a nationwide application process targeting technical program students. Jaysen graduated GM ASEP with a degree in Automotive Technology. He enjoys watching racing and works on a co-worker's race crew at local dirt track races. One of his goals is to learn "the ins and outs of a professional race team" and "to know that [he] helped get that truck to the race track and . . . in some small way, to make that truck perform the way it does."
Kyle, who graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Automotive Technology, has a strong drive to enter into the "racing world" and hopes this opportunity will help him get there. "Establishing a career in the racing industry is a major goal for me in my life," said Kyle. "I always knew I wanted to be involved with racing one way or another." During the summers he travels with his brother, a micro sprint racer, to events throughout southern Illinois and central Indiana, assisting with the car's maintenance.
When asked how he enjoyed the internship program Fastenal and BHR came together to offer, Jaysen stated that he was happily surprised at how much hands on experience he was able to do as he had expected much more watching than participating. Kyle stated that the experience definitely "added some flame to the fire" when asked if this internship experience increased his desire to get into the racing world. In an interview with BHR it was stated that a strength of the internship program was that it provided the opportunity to the interns to get a feel for what all goes into being a part of the racing world. It also provided BHR with "cream of the crop" candidates to internship there.
"Congratulations to Kyle and Jaysen for putting the work in to get to this stage," said Fastenal VP, Marketing Pat Resch. "Given their passion for racing and their trade, we know they're going to get a lot out of this experience. We couldn't have picked two better candidates to kick off our summer racing internship program."
